From fb POST MARCH 19 2024. Wells of Hope had the honour of hosting a volunteer group of students and chaperones from Holy Cross Catholic Secondary School in Peterborough. Eager to open their hearts to service, the students stepped forward from the sidelines and put their Faith into action. No longer being content as observers of the pain and suffering happening in the world, they picked up the cross of a homeless family and put a roof over their heads.

Martha is a mother to three young children. Her husband had fallen ill some years ago and does not have enough strength to work and provide for his family. Having no place to live, the family moved around and lived with relatives until their welcome was worn out. Desperate to have a place to call “home” for her children, Martha came to Campo Esperanza asking if we could help in any way.

The young missionaries put their cell phones away for the week and focused on being the hands and fee of Love for Martha and her family. Just as Simon was pulled from the sidelines, an observer of the Passion of Christ and suddenly found himself lifting the burden of the cross with Christ, the Holy Cross group hauled stones and bricks on their backs for days so that Martha could have the materials needed to build a home.

The students and chaperones also experienced the weight of the cross of walking for water each day. With 20 kilo buckets of water on their heads, they felt the pain in their backs and lack of air in their lungs as they made their way up the steep mountain slope, following the steps of Suzanna and so many women like her who have to carry this cross multiple times a day.

After spending a week at Campo Esperanza, the young hearts, energized with their experience of the power of Love, stepped on a plane vowing to be the pillar of Love in their homes. school and community. The world has just become a better place!
